Irlam, a residential area in Greater Manchester, England is known as the City of Salford. It was once part of the county of Lancashire. It contains Irlam and Lower Irlam as well as Cadishead, which is the most southwesterly settlement within the City of Salford. Irlam was on the northern bank of the River Irwell until its course was changed in the late 19th century to become part of the Manchester Ship Canal. Irlam's industrial development and growth as an inland port were stimulated by the ship canal. For much of the 20th-century steel, manufacturing was a significant source of employment.
